Chapter 1: psychology is a way of thinking. Psychologists are empiricists- base ones conclusions on systematic observations. Research procedures, research consumers: producers- interested in the research process (work in lab, consumers- interest in reading about research so they can later apply it (work out of lab- ie counselors) Four scientific cycles: cycle 1- a give-and-take between theory and data. The mother is valuable to a baby because she is the source of food. When the baby is hungry he goes to the mother for food, which results in a pleasant feeling. Overtime the mother is associated with pleasure: contact comfort theory. Babies attached to their mother because they provide a sense of warmth and comfort. The data may support or challenge the theory: theory data cycle. What makes a good theory: good theories are supported by data, good theories are falsifiable.
