Psychologists assess people empirically- they are vases on systematic collection and analysis of data. Psychologists are objective- meaning they are free from personal the personal bias or emotions of the scientist. Laws- principles that are so general as to apply to all situations in a given domain of inquiry. Theory- an intergrated set of principles that explains and predicts many but not all observed relationships within a given domain of inquiry: example: stage theory of cognitive development proposed by. Theory states that children pass through a series of cognitive stages as they grow and each stage must be mastered before going onto the next: 4 important characteristics of a theory they are general. Parasimonious- provide the simpliest possible account of the outcomes. Conceptual variables- are abstract ideas that form the basis of research hypothesis. Sometimes they can be somple like gender, weight and sometimes they can be complex like anxiety, learning, self- esteem.
