Children have more symptoms of persistent negative moods and lack of pleasure in play. More somatic complaints, language not fully developed, irritability, sleeping too much/little, social withdrawal, slow movement. Temper outbursts (inconsistent with age) that are crazy in proportion, intensity, or duration. Constantly irritable mood, anger all the time. Long-term, constant, low-grade depression depressed, low self-esteem, hopelessness (less severe), 2 years+ Diagnosed if mdd episode criteria is not met in 2 years. Sadness, loss of interest/pleasure, irritability, fatigue, eating/sleeping is off. Occurs in episodic function (bouts of severe depression) Severe depression symptoms, irritability, and tension before menstruation. Extreme mood shifts that can disrupt work and damage relationships. Bipolar risk for suicide in this population is 15x higher than in general population. Manic episode (symptoms most days, at least 1 week) Increased goal-directed activity, decreased need for sleep, excessive risk-taking. Possibly severe enough to hospitalize patient in case of self harm. Hypomanic episode milder form of mania (symptoms most days)
