Said that she wanted to marry him but after he was engaged to someone else ~ dowery. Facing middle age with no degree, and no wife. Fewer americans are marrying & decline most among men w/less education. Factors: greater economic independence of women & greater acceptance of couples living together outside of marriage. Men w/out college degrees are not marrying b/c the pool of women in their social circles shrunk ~ women look for a mate w/more education & better financial prospects. Single men = high school dropouts, blacks, unemployed. Women start climbing educational ladder, surpassing college attendance & graduation rates of men, pool of partners shrank. Changes in roles of men & women unended traditional marriage. As more women join work force, become less dependent on men"s earnings.
