Social imagination (c. wright mills; 1959): application of imaginative thought to asking & answering sociological questions. Someone using the sociological imagination thinks himself away from the familiar routines of daily life. >each of us lives in small orbit & worldview is limited by social situations encountered daily gives limited perspective & pov. >avg person doesn"t understand personal problems as part of larger framework. Need quality of mind that makes it possible to understand larger meaning of experiences. Social structure: underlying regularities or patterns in how ppl behave in their relationships with one another. >social construction: an idea or practice that a group of ppl agree exists. Maintained overtime by ppl taking its existence for granted (ex: college admission system) Rational for individuals to act this way self interest & incentives. >socialization: social processes through which children develop an awareness of social norms & values & achieve distinct sense of self.
