PSY 260 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Cognitive Revolution, Cognitive Psychology, Edward B. Titchener
Document Summary
Chapter 1 - the science of the mind. Almost everything you do/feel/say depends on your cognition. Cognition - what you know, what you remember, and what you think. Your ability to cope with grief depends on how your memory functions. When the field of cognitive psychology was first launched, it was broadly focused on the scientific study of knowledge. A huge range of our actions, thoughts, and feelings depend on knowledge. Even understanding a simple story relies on memory (background knowledge to provide context) Clinical amnesia - when someone, because of brain damage, has lost the ability to remember certain materials. H. m. had brain surgery intended to control his severe epilepsy. Had little trouble remembering events prior to the surgery. Was completely unable to recall any event that occured after the operation. Relived the grief of hearing about how his uncle died every time as if it was the first time he was hearing it.
