Color variability: our visual syst capable of discriminating about 7million diff colors; but only use 7-10 color names, our color categories allow us to ignor subtle diff in color. Definitional approach define minimal criteria that an object must have to be included in a category. Prototype approach new objects are compared to each category"s prototype; obj classified based on best match. Prototype = average of a category"s membership. Prototype is rarely an actual member of a category. Prototype constantly changes with each new exemplar encountered or object added to the category.
