Chapter 9 part 1 theories of social development. Theories of social development attempt to account for: Must explain how children"s development is influenced by people & individuals around them. Must examine ways that humans affect each other. Freud and erikson"s theories: development is largely driven by biological maturation. Freud"s theory: behavior is motivated by need to satisfy basic, unconscious biological drives. Erikson"s theory: development is driven by a series of developmental crises related to age and biological maturation; individual must resolve these crises to achieve healthy development. Psychoanalytic theories stress continuity of individual differences (early experiences shape development!)
