PSY 220 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Behavioural Genetics, Turner Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome
Document Summary
Species heredity - the genetic endowment that members of a species have in common, including genes that influence biological maturation and aging processes. Species heredity is one reason certain patterns of development and aging are universal. There is genetic variation in a species. Some genes aid adaptation more than others do. Genes that aid their bearers in adapting to their environment will be passed to future generations more frequently than genes that do not (natural selection). Evolution is about the interaction between genes and environment. Evolutionary psychology - the application of evolutionary theory to understanding why humans think and behave as they do. Cultural evolution - (cid:449)e (cid:862)i(cid:374)he(cid:396)it(cid:863) f(cid:396)o(cid:373) p(cid:396)e(cid:448)ious ge(cid:374)e(cid:396)atio(cid:374)s a (cid:272)ha(cid:396)a(cid:272)te(cid:396)isti(cid:272)all(cid:455) hu(cid:373)a(cid:374) environment and tried and true ways of adapting to it, learn to adjust to changing conditions, and pass on what we learn to the next generations. Conception - the moment when an egg is fertilized by the sperm.
