Not only are american elections unusually frequent compared to most countries, but an enormous number of positions are elected. Each election breaks the spending records spent in the last one. Public officials on every level devote enormous amounts of time and energy to raising money. Institute for justice and the american civil liberties union argue that donating to campaigns is a form of free speech.
