Document Summary

Matter- can be classified into three types- elements, compounds and mixtures. Element is the simplest type of matter with unique physical and chemical properties (occur in molecular form; molecule is an independent structure of two or more atoms bound together) Compound consists of two or more different elements bonded chemically. Mixture consists of two or more substances physically intermingled but not chemically combined. Law of mass conservation: the total mass of substance does not change during a chemical reaction. Law of definite composition: a particular compound is composed of the same elements in the same parts by mass. Rutherford"s theory based on mass, charge and velocity shows that. > an atom is mostly space occupied by electrons. > in the center is a tiny region which he calls nucleus and contains all the positive charge (protons) Atom is an electrically neutral, spherical entity composed of a positively charged central nucleus surrounded by one or more negatively charged electrons.
