Document Summary

Stressors: they may come from within or outside of the family, be predictable or unexpected and so forth. Stress in one area of life also tends to spill over into other areas of life. A healthy person is not necessarily free of stress, but copes with stress when it arises. Weightlifting=healthful stress to the body causing muscles to grow larger. Research shows, moderate stress, especially during childhood may be related to later achievement. Stress is harmful only when it becomes so strong that it causes an individual to behave in an unhealthful manner. General-adaptation syndrome: pattern of response to stress individuals exhibit. If stress has been reduced to a tolerable level, the symptoms do not come back and recovery ensues. Anxiety: generalized fear, without a specific object or source. Relaxing = reduce emotional arousal and can then make better decisions. Defense mechanisms can give time to adjust to a problem that might at first be overwhelming.
