Chapter two: perception of self and others. [chapter outline: the perceptual process, perception of self, Sensation is the process by which out sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, skin, tongue) that contain sense receptors change physical energy (light, sound waves, chemical substance) Perception is the processing of these neutral impulses so that we go beyond merely sensing and begin to make sense of the impulses. Perception is how we build meaningful patterns. Perception is the process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting sensory data. Sensory acuity- the level of sensitivity of our senses. We don"t process what we don"t see, hear, taste, touch, or smell. Selectively attending to stimuli two processes: 1) focusing on specific stimuli and 2) screening out other data. Inattentional blindness- lack of attention to an unexpected object. Inattentional blindness is a daily communication occurrence. What we attend to at any given moment is influenced by the nature of stimulus".
