Chapter 8 - physical development in early childhood. Height: add 2 to 3 inches a year. Epiphyses = growth centers where cartilage hardens into bone. At 2-6 years old, [they] develop 45 epiphyses. Help estimate a kid"s skeletal age (progress to physical maturity) Kids lose baby teeth at end of preschool years. Lose primary teeth to get secondary teeth. Teeth decay is serious; can affect permanent teeth. Disease outbreaks happen when you don"t vaccinate your kids. Preschoolers don"t eat as much because their growth slows down. Kids imitate food choices of the people they admire. Gh is released during sleep, sleep helps body growth. Cognitive problems (decreased memory, attention problems, external/internal problems) Dome kids can suffer from sleep disorders. Sleep walkers (wander around in their sleep) Sleep terrors (scream, thrash, speak, increased heart rate, etc) Accidents = leading cause of child mortality. Boys are twice as likely to get injured than girls. Some are at a greater risk that others.
