Document Summary

Chapter 5 notes - physical development in infancy and toddlerhood. 12 months = add 50% of original height. 24 months = add 75% of original height. As the child"s size goes up, parts of the body grows at diff rates. Cephalocaudal (p): during the prenatal period, the head develops quicker than the lower half of the body. Head is 1/4 of body height @ birth. Proximodistal (p): growth occurs from the center of the body outward. Head, trunk, chest = grow 1st in prenatal period. Brain is nearer to adult size @ birth. Understand brain growth by looking at (2) points: (1) at level of individ brain cells (2) bigger level of the cerebral cortex. As synapses form, many neurons die bc they need space for growth (20-80%) Prenatal period - neural tube makes lots of neurons. Brain has 100 to 200 billion neurons. Synapses: gaps where fibers from diff neurons come close together but don"t touch.
