Rivalry between individuals or groups over and outcome; always has a winner and a loser: negative & dysfunctional. Makes people feel uncomfortable and consequently makes them less productive. A natural part of organizational life and beneficial to the workplace. Conflict has both positive and negative consequences. On the positive side, all of us have experienced the exhilaration and energy that come from competition. Competition and conflict can motivate people and inspire them to focus on the task. Involvement in competition brings group members closer together and leads to increased discussions of various issues and alternatives.
