Document Summary

To begin this book, we are introduced to the narrator phillip pirrip (a. k. a. Pip) who did not grow up in a typical nuclear family. This sets up a prevalent theme throughout great expectations, which is the concept of non-traditional families. Pip is an orphan who lives with his mean, ugly, older sister and her blacksmith husband, mr. joe gargery. Pip is terrified of his sister because she is physically and verbally abusive. This experience explains pip"s constant sense of guilt that many abused children suffer from. However, pip finds comfort and love in mr. joe whom we learn pip sees as more of a brother rather than a father figure. Mr. joe is actually from a non traditional family as well. Joe"s father was an alcoholic who beat him which is why he can relate well to pip. Mr. joe is a compassionate man and says he sorry he can"t control mrs. joe"s temper or her love of the tickler.
