Began about 4. 2 billion years ago: this is a hypothesis (there is evidence based on an observation that leads to a theory or several observations that led to a hypothesis) 500 million years between when the earth was formed and when life began. A few centuries ago (based on observation: people thought that new living things appeared all of the time, life came from basic elements. Known as spontaneous generation of life: leaves fell from a tree and turned into a fish. Mid 1800s tested by louis pasteur (famous for pasteurizing milk) Decided to test this theory by creating an experiment by pasteurizing milk. Pasteur discovered that microbes growing in the solution were coming from another source, not that the microbes were actually generating new life. Today the earth is made up of about 20% oxygen, which is generation from plants photosynthesis! Earth before life arose: earth is about 4. 6 billion years old.
