Overview of cellular responses to stress and noxious stimuli: homeostasis intracellular milieu kept w/in narrow range of physiologic parameters. Cellular adaptations to stress: hypertrophy: increased cell & organ size, often due to increased workload. Hormonal hyperplasia: glandular proliferation of female breast during puberty & pregnancy; 2. Induced by altered differentiation pathway of tissue stem cells: reduced functions or increased propensity for malignant transformation, ex: barrett esophagus, bladder - urothelial to sq metaplasia & cancer. Overview of cell injury and cell death: reversible cell injury.
