0rganic chemistry= the study of compounds containing carbon. Organic compounds were thought to arise only in living organism. Was redefined as the study of carbon compounds, regardless of origin after. Stanley miller helped bring the abiotic (non living) synthesis of organic compounds into context of evolution. Abiotic synthesis of organic compounds, perhaps near volcanoes, could have been early stage in origin of life. Major elements of life: c, h, o, n, s, p. Carbon has special ability for form 4 bonds. Carbon usually completes its valence shell by sharing 4 electrons. Carbon usually forms single or double covalent bonds. Every grouping of a carbon bonded to 4 other atoms has a tetrahedral shape. When 2 carbons are joined by a double bond, the bonds from both carbons are all in the same place. Most frequent bonding partners: h, o, n. Since co2 is a simple molecule and lacks hydrogen, often considered inorganic, even though contains carbon.
