Environmental defense is key in today"s industrial world. Conservation of the environment is the primary objective of conservationism, a social movement in defense of ecological policies and laws, and it has as values biodiversity, biotic balance, and landscape harmony, among others. This position, however, is not identical with, and should not be confused with, that of environmentalists. The latter advocate non-exploitation of nature"s resources, while conservationists demand responsible and environmentally sustainable exploitation. The conservation of the environment is the product of various reasons, such as: scientific reasons. The preservation of genetic biodiversity is key to sustaining life on earth, in addition to the fact that irreparable ecological damage tends to have unpredictable chemical and biological repercussions, which may well harm human health: economic reasons. Many exploitable territories carry significant cultural value for various populations, who consider them places of pilgrimage or mystical contact, when not simply part of the tourist and traditional attraction of their countries: ethical reasons.
