ANTH 102 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Eulachon, Social Inequality, Franz Boas
Document Summary
Arrival of people on the northwest coast. On land, you have dense, temperate forests. A very rich marine environment (e. g. kelp forests most productive ecosystems on earth). 19th, early 20th century groups ranked societies; royalty developed in the late. There could be 10, 15, 20 houses grouped together. On the south side, houses were longer and larger. Across the northwest coast, population was pretty dense. There is no reason to assume that inequality is somehow the normal state of things. Ignores the fact that fishing differs from hunting and gathering. Up until the last decade, many archaeologists argued that prior to about 5,000 years ago everyone on the east coast was hunting terrestrial animals. 5,000 years ago, they stabilized and moved to marine resources. Early pacific period: 6,400 to 3,850 cal bp. Middle pacific period: 3,850 to 1,500 cal bp. Late pacific period: 1,500 to 350 cal bp. There were a number of spots along the coast that were unglaciated.
