Document Summary

Concept 1: monomers of triglycerides are fatty acids and glycerol. Generate a large amount of atp because of their chemical composition. Saturated lipids - line the inside of your arteries decreasing the amount of oxygenated blood that can be transmitted to the vital organs. Unsaturated fats - do not generate as much atp as do saturated fats but do not play a major role in clogging your arteries. Excess lipids - excess amounts are stored and eventually clog arteries, increase blood pressure, and are a major cause of death. Precursor to many other biological molecules such as hormones, steroids, and provide the key source of energy in various environmental situations. Triglyceride - lipid that is a hydrocarbon molecule that is insoluble in water. Composed of glycerol backbone and three fatty acids. Fatty acids - contain large regions composed almost entirely of hydrogen and carbon with non polar carbon- carbon or carbon-hydrogen bonds.
