Positive Psychology
● The field of positive psychology- adopts a more optimistic perspective on human
potential, motives, and capacities.
○ Tends to put more emphasis on prevention than treatment, they want to try and
prevent problems before the exist (primary), or intervene if before it gets worse
(secondary), or treatment (tertiary)
● Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
○ Starts off with basic needs taken care of before anything else
○ Self actualization is to fulfill one’s potential and only a few people can achieve
this
● Self-actualization- reaching one’s full potential
● Humanistic psychology- carl rogers is the father of this
○ It’s not used as much bc there’s not enough scientific backing
○ Client centered therapy
● Human resilience
○ One of human strengths, we need to be resilient to survive
○ Despite life’s majority of people manage to live with dignity and purpose
● Defensive pessimism
○ Cushion the blow of failure
○ Harness anxiety for motivation
● Learned helplessness
○ People who have experienced many negative events in life become passive
because they get used to expecting them.
● Self- efficacy- belief of one’s abilities; plays a huge role in how a person approaches
their goals, problems, and tasks
○ Telling yourself that you can do something and continue to try to do it even if you
can’t
○ Knowing where your strengths are and when to give up
● Hedonic Treadmill
○ A well cited study showing that people who had befallen great fortune went back
to their normal rate of of happiness before they received the great fortune
● Happiness- satisfaction with life
● Clinicians are more interested in practice of psychotherapy
○ Because there was research done on breast cancer patients, and the results
were that psychological intervention program can help recurrence less likely
● Pathology of normal- fulfilling one’s potential sounds alot like self actualization
○ Maslow believed only a few people could reach self- actualization
○ Positive psych has a wider view
● Can we make ourselves happy?
○ Expressing gratitude, committing acts of kindness, visualizing best possible
selves (this one can make us more sad than anything else bc we are sad that we
aren’t there yet).
