Existentialism- a reaction to the rationalism of science during the industrial revolution. Purpose was to regain contact with the experience of being alive and aware. Humanism- area of philosophy that emphasizes the personal worth of the individual. Phenomenology- one"s conscious experience of the world. Construal- your own experience of the world. Thrown-ness- refers to the time and place and circumstances into which you happened to be born. Angst- existential anxiety; caused by thinking about the meaning of life and what your purpose is. Anguish- everyone feels this bc their choices are not perfect. Despair- because of the awareness that many outcomes are beyond control. Forlornness- sad and lonely bc people must make his own choices. Causes one to live a cowardly lie. One will not be happy by ignoring existential threats and only being surrounded by material objects. It is impossible not to worry about existential things.
