The way traits are manifested might change. Strength: attempts to understand how people differ. Weakness: neglects aspects of personality common to all ppl and how each person is unique. If situations mainly control how people behave, then the existence or relevance of traits questionable. Focused on the situation more than traits. Trait psychologists focus on importance of situation. Mischel came up w this; states: if behavior varies across situations, than situational differences and not personality traits determine behavior. Gladwell states that extraordinary people were in the right situation at the right time. Single behavior or occasion may be influenced by extenuating circumstances unrelated to personality. Implies that traits are only one influence on behavior also implies that traits refers to the person"s average level. Interactionism- the effect of a personality variable may depend on the situation or vice versa. People change in certain types of situations (i. e. stanford prison experiment) Evil is in the situation according to zimbardo.
