Document Summary
Prenatal development: nature and nurture from the start. Genes (nature) and the environment (nurture) are intimately intertwined. From zygote to birth: getting a start in life. The genetic heritage of every normal human being is 23 pairs of chromosomes. One member of each pair coming from an egg and the other from a sperm. Eggs and sperm contain only a single member of the 23 chromosome pairs. In an egg, one of these 23 is a chromosome known as x. In a sperm, the corresponding chromosome is either an x or y. Maturation: the process that produces genetically programmed changes in the body, brain, or behavior with increasing age. From conception to fetus: a tale of three trimesters. Embryo: a developing baby from the point where the major axis of the body is present until all major structures are present, spanning from about 2 weeks to 8 weeks after conception.
