Psychopathology- study of abnormal behavior and psychological dysfunction. Situational context- the social or environmental setting of a person"s behavior. Subjective discomfort- emotional distress while engaging in a particular behavior or thought process. Maladaptive- the person finds it hard to adapt to the demands of day to day living. Psychological disorder- abnormal thinking or behavior that includes at least 2 of the 5 criteria. Does the thinking or behavior go against social norms. Does the thought process or behavior cause the person to be dangerous to self or others. Biological model- proposes that psychological disorders have a biological or medical cause. This model explains disorders such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. Psychological models- another way to describe mental disorders. Psychodynamic view- based on the work of freud; explains disordered thinking and behavior as the result of repressing one"s threatening thoughts, memories, and concerns in the unconscious mind. Behaviorism- behaviorists theorize that disordered behavior is learned just like normal behavior.
