Diverse workforce has a better understanding of the needs of diverse customers. Ethnocentrism- exaggerated tendency to think the characteristics of one"s own group or race are superior to those of other groups or races. Developmental model of intercultural sensitivity (dmis) is a taxonomy that describe how people react to cultural differences and develop intercultural competence. As our attitudes and behavior with regard to cultural difference become more sophisticated, we become more interculturally competent. One"s own culture is the central reference point. All other cultures are viewed and evaluated from the reference point of one"s own culture. Differences are avoided by denying their existence (denial), by seeing one"s own culture as superior and other cultures as inferior (defense) or by assuming that all cultures are basically the same- like mine (minimization) Denial- one"s own culture is the only real one. Other cultures are avoided and treated with disinterest. Defense- one"s own culture is the only good one.
