Document Summary
3. 1 gregor mendel discovered the basic principles of heredity. Gregor mendel was born in the present-day czech republic and worked as an abbot in a monastery, having studied at the university of vienna from 1851 to 1853. The signiicance of mendel"s discoveries in geneics with his pea plants was not discovered unil 1900. Mendel"s studies with pea plants focused on seven traits with two easily disinguishable forms. Mendel was successful because his experimental approach adopted mathemaical interpretaion of his data. It took mendel 10 years to publish his results. Gene: an inherited factor (region of dna) that helps determine a characterisic. Allele: one of two or more alternaive forms of a gene. Locus: speciic place on a chromosome occupied by an allele. Genotype: set of alleles possessed by an individual organism. Heterozygote: an individual organism possessing two diferent alleles at a locus. Homozygote: an individual organism possessing two of the same alleles at a locus.
