Consistently observed differences (averages) among diverse groups of students. Culture: behaviors and belief systems of a longstanding social group. Individuals who have common historical roots, values, beliefs, and behaviors. Acculturation: adopting some of the new culture"s values and customs. Cultural mismatch: different cultural norms at home and school. Culture shock: confusion about the behaviors expected of them in new setting. Language and dialect that students speak at home and/or fluently. Children and adolescents function most effectively when they can use both their local dialect and standard english in appropriate settings. Eye contact: can be a sign that you are paying attention or a sign of disrespect. Some cultures do not ask and expect answers from students (ire cycle) Some cultures wait longer to respond (not a sign of misunderstanding) Conceptions of time (some cultures do not observe strict schedules or focus on future events)
