The Basics of Networking
Internet is a network of networks
General Communication
Communication types:
Synchronous requires both sender and receiver to be active at the same time
Ex: phone conversation
Asynchronous the sending and receiving occur at different times
Ex: postcards, email, text msg
Communication Transmission methods (number of receivers):
Broadcast a single sender and many receivers
Ex: Radio broadcasting
Multicast there are many receivers but the intended recipients are not the whole
population
Ex: magazines covering specialized topics
Point-to-point one specific sender and one specific receiver
Opposite of broadcast and multicast
Ex: txt msg
The Internet's Communication Properties
Internet supports point to point asynchronous communication
Fundamental feature of the Internet is that it provides a general communication "fabric" linking
all computers connected to it
Ex: internet can act like a postal system but at electronic speed
Skype
Bc its possible to post a webpage or YouTube video that can be accessed by anyone, the
internet offers a form of broadcasting tat compared with radio or television
Internet becomes more effective with each additional computer added to it
The Client/ Server Structure
Most interactions over the internet use this protocol
A Brief Encounter
When u click a web link, computer begins the process of accessing the page for you. At that
moment, ur computer enters into a client/server interaction. Yours is client computer and the
computer on which the web page is stored is the server computer aka a Web server
Client
refers to any situation where one computer, the client, gets services from another
computer, the server
As a result of the client request, the server sends page back over to the Internet, fulfilling the
request. Ends client/ server relationship
Many Brief Relationships
Sever can handle many clients at a time
