First effort to impose new taxes on colonies to help pay for war. Placed an import tax on molasses, and harsh punishment for smugglers. Purpose to save money by having troops live in colonist"s houses and provide food and supplies. 1765- required a special tax stamp for newspapers, wills, licenses, titles, insurance policies, contracts, Merchants protested because they sometimes traded in smuggled goods. Colonial assemblies-passed resolutions declaring only they could pass taxes for the colonies. Stamp act congress- sent petition demanding end of tax. Writes of assistance- customs officers could use it as warrant to. Colonists protested that the writs of asst. were violation of rights. 1770- repealed all duties except 1 on tea to show had. B. e. i. c. sell directly to colonies instead of shipping to britain. B. e. i. c. could sell tea in colonies. the right to tax. Sons of liberty threatened ship captains who brought the tea and merchants who would buy it.
