SLHS 215 Book Notes U3
Ch. 9 Auditory Prosthetic Devices:
ā€¢ Two Main Components of Ampliļ¬cation:
ā€¢ Gain: the ampliļ¬cation provided, difference in dB between input and output
ā€¢ Output: the maximum possible sound pressure level (SPL), the number of dB of the
output
ā€¢ Volume Control: some ampliļ¬cation devices have a manual control wheel that allows them
to monitor their own gain, while other devices manage gain digitally
ā€¢ Use/As Worn: the gain when the volume control is in the middle of the usable range
or the volume range of the hearing aid (this is assumed to be the normal setting at
which it is worn)
ā€¢ Full-On: the gain when the volume control is on the highest setting
ā€¢ Maximum Output: measured to determine the maximum possible acoustic output of the
hearing aid, should be adjusted carefully by the audiologist to optimize the amount of gain
available to the wearer while minimizing the amount of time the hearing aid is in saturation
ā€¢ Hypothetical Input-Output: hearing aid is in full-on position,
ā€¢ low input levels (50-60 dB): reveal a gain of about 25 dB
ā€¢ high input levels (90-100 dB): the output remains constant at 110 dB or the maximum
output of the hearing aid,
ā€¢ Linear Circuit: for every time the input was increased 10 dB, the output increased 10
dB
ā€¢ Compression Circuits: nonlinear circuits, designed to obtain a better match between
the wide range of sound levels in the environment and the narrower range of
listening available in the hearing-impaired person
