SOC 10000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Sexually Transmitted Infection, Peter Bearman, Organizational Culture
Document Summary
Social groups: social groups form the building blocks for society and most social interaction, just the two of us. It is the most intimate form of social life because people in it are dependent upon each other. Both people must be committed in order for the dyad to exist. Simmel states that there is an inherent symmetry of power. To be a pure dyad, the relationship has to be voluntary. Triad is a group of three or more. Force is much stronger than in a dyad: and then there were three. Group holds supra-individual power in a triad. Group is not dependent on any one member. Sometimes one member of the group is a mediator who is a member of a triad who attempts to resolve conflict between the two other actors in the group. Another possible role is tertius gaudens which is a member of the triad who benefits from conflict between the other two members of the group.
