Her mother had died of a massive heart attack when lauren was 13 years old. Lauren"s pregnancy was smooth, other than some nausea in her first trimester. Lauren"s only worry was going into labor prematurely. Lauren had scheduled an induction of labor at 39 weeks and 6 days. Lauren gave birth to a baby girl. Every year in the united states, 700 to 900 women die from pregnancy or childbirth- related causes. American women are more than three times as likely as canadian women to die in the maternal period (start of pregnancy to one year after delivery or termination) Six times as likely to die as scandinavians. Maternal mortality is significantly more common among african-americans, low-income women, and in rural areas.
