Document Summary

Chem 110 chapter 2 notes: atoms, molecules, and ions. Atom: extremely small particle of matter that retains its identity during chemical reactions. Chemical reaction: rearrangement of the atoms present in the reacting substances to give new chemical combinations present in the substances formed by the reaction. Law of conservation of mass: same amount that goes into a reaction must come out. Law of multiple proportions: when two elements form more than one compound, the masses of one element in these compounds for a fixed mass of the other element are in ratios of small whole numbers. Electron: very light, neg charged particle around pos charge nucleus. Ernest rutherford: nuclear model: 1911, shot alpha radiation through sheets of metal. Most tiny electrons were able to pass through metal unaffected, but if it a nucleus in the metal, the pos charge was strong enough to repel and scatter the alpha particles in different directions.
