Controversial question in the census at this time was regarding race and ethnicity. 1997 mixed race option added in census. 1940 to 2010 one out of six sample households method chosen to gather more detailed data. In 2010 the census was only short form (small number of items asked from many households). The american community survey collected more detailed data (long form detailed data collected from a sample). De facto population the people who are at a given place the day the census is taken.
