Psych 221 chapter 5 the self. The origin and nature of the self concept. Begins around 18-24 months old and continues to develop. Self-concept: beliefs that people have about their personal attributes. Physical changes have little influence, but psychological changes influence view of person (nice to cruel) Introspection: people look inward and examine their thoughts, feelings, and motives. We are often aware of final result of thought process but often unaware of the cognitive process that got us there. Telling more than we can know : explanations of feelings and behavior go beyond what they can reasonably know. Casual theories: theories that explain why we feel a certain way (weather, sleep, etc. ) Consequences of introspecting about reasons: pros and cons list makes decisions harder; use reasons that are easier to put on paper, reasons-generated attitude change: attitude change resulting from thinking about reasons for the attitude (pros and cons) Bring to mind reasons that don"t really reflect how someone feels.
