Political party: group of officials, hold office, help others obtain and maintain office. Attaining office sets them apart from interest groups that only want to influence policy. Not limited to democracies, all about more than just bringing someone to power. Provide information shortcuts so people feel more inclined to vote for someone/something because the party they follow also supports that something. Party identification: attachment to a party helps citizens locate themselves in politics. Being selected as party candidate is necessary for good run in office (rather than by obligation) Socializes them because all of them need to make their way up the social political ladder.
