PHIL 012 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Truth Function, Object Language, Propositional Formula
Document Summary
Many propositions are built from one or more propositions. Propositional connectives: and, or, if, then, iff. Propositional operators: operate on a proposition to create a more complex proposition. Truth function: truth value output is entirely determined by truth value input. Special truth function: if both propositions as inputs are true, the complex proposition is true. If either are false, the complex proposition is false. Each of the proposition that compose the conjunction are called conjuncts (left and right) If truth value input of both propositions is true, then the complex proposition is true. If the truth value input of the proposition is true, then the complex proposition involving is false. The main operator is the operator with the largest scope (its scope contains all other operators) Metalanguage: the language being used to discuss the object language. An expression is being used if it expresses something about the world or mental state.
