NURS 225 Chapter Notes - Chapter 30-32: Atheroma, Low-Density Lipoprotein, Hyperlipidemia
Document Summary
225 chapter 30 (742-751) & chapter 32 (797-814) review: define hyperlipidemia. Hyperlipidemia is an excess of lipids within the blood. Ldl is also known as low-density protein and hdl is also known as high-density protein. A low-density protein is the main carrier of cholesterol, while a high-density protein is actually 50% protein. The reason why hdl"s are considered good cholesterol is because considering hdl"s are low in cholesterol and rich in surface phospholipids, it facilitates the clearance of cholesterol from the periphery, including atheromatous plaques, and transports it to the liver. In shorter words, a somewhat decreased chance of developing atherosclerosis. It depends on what type of hypercholesterolemia we are observing. Hdl between 40-50 mg/dl for men, 50-59 mg/dl for women. Typically, hyperlipidemia treatment is based around the attempt in trying to reduce the level of ldl cholesterol in the blood. So therefore, the primary treatment involves cholesterol-lowering therapy, especially for those individuals who have an increased risk of chd.
