Since 1960s, sizable group of more prosperous african americans has emerged for the first time in american history. Greater percentage or single-parent families than whites: result of higher death rates and more children born to unmarried moms. Only about 2/3 african americans will ever marry at current rates. 72% of african american children are born to unmarried women. Studies in 1990 suggest that for every 3 black unmarried women in their 20s, there was about one unmarried man with earnings above poverty line. On average, grandparents play a stronger role in black families than in white. Intersectionality = extent to which their lives are affected by overlapping systems of class, racial and gender-based disadvantage. Mediating structure = a midlevel social institution through which individuals can negotiate with government and resist governmental abuses of power: civic groups, churches, neighborhoods, families.
