Motivational interviewing operates under the premise that ambivalence is a normal state that affects many areas of one"s life. People become stuck when they feel two ways about a situation. People who are ambivalent may not respond in predictable ways. Increasing negative consequences does not always decrease the attractiveness of the behavior. In fact, coercion, persuasion, use of threats, and confrontation have been found to inhibit intrinsic motivation. Engage in a lot of talk but no action: this can be frustrating for the therapist. May commit to an action but don"t do it.
