Conformity: tendency to change perceptions, opinions, or behavior in ways that are consistent with group norms. Social norms: rule of conduct reflecting standards of social approval and disapproval. Implicit (unwritten don"t arrive at parties on time) Sherif: because of ambiguity, participants turned to each other for guidance informational influence: private conformity: changes in both overt behavior and beliefs, you change your mind. Asch: obvious that the group was wrong: normative influence, public conformity: superficial change. Age differences ( we tend to see younger people/adults as the age group that conforms the most) Minority influence: process by which dissenters produce change in a group: when there was an ally, conformity dropped by almost 80, any dissent can reduce normative pressures to conform. One"s familiarity with the task affects conformity.
