Sesamoid bones: look like seeds, grow in tendons where there is a lot of friction, helps the tendon from wear and tear as the tendon slides over a body prominence ex: knee caps/patella. The cranial, facial, sternum and hyoid bones are all part of the axial skeleton. The external occipital protuberance is located on the occipital bones posterior surface. The ethmoid bone forms lateral bony ridges in the nasal cavity. The skull,ribs and vertebral column are all included in the axial skeleton. The frontal bone makes up the largest anterior portion of the cranium. The sella turcica, which contains the pituitary gland is located in the sphenoid bone. The following bones make up the facial bones: The nasal septum is formed by the vomer and the ethmoid. The bone that forms the cheekbone is called the zygomatic bone. The only moveable bone of the skull is the mandible.
