Document Summary

Psych 2300 - chapter 7 - sampling: estimating the frequency of behaviors and beliefs. External validity concerns both samples and settings. A population is the e(cid:374)ti(cid:396)e set of ppl o(cid:396) p(cid:396)odu(cid:272)ts i(cid:374) (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h (cid:455)ou"(cid:396)e i(cid:374)te(cid:396)ested. The sample is a smaller set, taken from the pop. If you measure every product or ask every person, you would be conducting a census. Specifying a population which you want to generalize = population of interest. Coming from a pop. vs representing the pop. In a biased/unrepresentative sample some members of the pop. of interest have a much higher probability of being included in the sample compared to other members. In a representative/unbiased sample all members of the pop. have an equal chance of being included in the sample. Only representative samples allow us to make inferences about the pop. of interest. A sample may contain only unusual or extreme responses/people. Only studying ppl that you can contact easily.
