Ch 38 - dancing at the keyboard: chopin and romantic piano music. The piano is considered the most expressive instrument. Melody and harmony could be performed on the piano. Virtuoso performers came about, it used to be that composers would also perform their pieces. The piano was a common feature in middle and upper middle class homes. Also called character piece - same as a song. Chopin was one of the most original artists of the 1800s. His music looks back to his polish roots. His music calls for the use of rubato - robbed time". Rhythm/meter = moderate triple meter; dance like dotted and double-dotted rhythms; frequent accents on 3rd beat, later on 2nd beat. Harmony = shifts bt major and minor; modal harmonies; much chromaticism. Texture = largely homophonic, w regular left hand accompaniment in quarter notes.
