Most americans don"t like the idea of class o o o. Doesn"t work with american dream and sense of mobility. This dislike goes back to colonial period because even then people had to downplay class. Founding- many were escaping europe so comparison point was futile system. Us had a lot land that was free or cheap out west. A lot opportunities - fur trapping, gold panning. Necessity to work together to fight the british. Race component - common link of whiteness that pushed down class division etc. Defined themselves above and against native americans, slaves. Economic class- people who have common position in economy o. Different from social class which is people who interact together and have common lifestyle o. No matter what class is relational - can"t have one class w/o the other. Power flows through major religious, military, and political channels. Chapter 3: corporate community and upper class.
