Emotion is often the servant of reason. Emotions: mental states or feelings associated w our evaluation of our experiences. Discrete emotions theory: theory that humans experience a small number of distinct emotions that are rooted in their biology. Serves one or more distinctive evolutionary functions. Discrete emotions theorists would say that coordinated set of reactions is evolutionarily adaptive. Charles darwin pointed out the similarities b/w the emotional expressions of humans and many nonhuman animals. North american and european countries recognize & generate the same emotional expressions across cultures. Rival hypothesis: similarities may be due to shared experiences rather than a shared evolutionary heritage. Primary emotions: small number (~7) of emotions believed by some theorists to be cross- culturally universal. Just because certain emotions exist across most/all cultures, doesn"t mean that cultures are identical in their emotional expressions. Display rules: societal guidelines for how and when to express emotions.
